What a script shares with an arch

An arch holds tons of weight with no mortar. A good video holds a restless viewer the same way — through structure, not force.

A Roman arch can stand for two thousand years holding tons of stone above an open space, and it does it with no mortar. Just shaped blocks, stacked, leaning on each other. Pull one out near the top and the whole thing comes down in a second. Leave them all in place and you could drive a truck over it.

That's a strange kind of strength — a structure built from loose pieces that carries enormous weight, but only in exactly one arrangement.

A good video does the same improbable thing. It holds a restless person — thumb hovering over the next thumbnail, three other tabs open — for ten minutes, twenty, with nothing forcing them to stay. No mortar. Just shaped pieces, in one arrangement that holds.

Most scripts try to hold attention with force. An arch holds it with structure. The difference is the whole game.

It holds by shape, not by weight

An arch doesn't resist the load above it by being thick or heavy. It resists by shape. The curve routes the downward force around the opening and into the ground on either side. The stone is barely working; the geometry is doing the job.

When a video starts shedding viewers, the instinct is to add mass. More cuts. More facts. A louder hook, a faster edit, a pattern interrupt every eight seconds. You're thickening the walls of a structure that's failing for a reason no wall will fix.

The answer is almost never more. It's shape — the order things arrive in, where the weight sits, what leans on what. A video that holds isn't busier than one that doesn't. It's better arranged.

Every arch has one stone that locks it

At the crown of the arch sits a single wedge-shaped block: the voussoir, the keystone. It goes in last, and it locks every other stone into place. Until it drops, the arch is just a pile leaning on scaffolding. The moment it seats, the whole span becomes load-bearing.

Every video has one too — a single load-bearing idea the rest leans toward. The promise the opening turns into a debt. The payoff every digression is quietly walking back toward. Find it before you write a word, and every line has somewhere to point. Skip it, and you get a video that's full of good moments and somehow doesn't hold: a stack of stones with no keystone, propped up by editing that eventually gets tired and walks off.

The first real question on any script isn't what do I say. It's what is the one thing this whole video locks onto — and have I earned it by the end.

It breaks where the fit is worst

An arch never fails at its strongest stone. It fails at its weakest joint — the seam where two pieces don't quite meet, where the load finds a gap and pries it open.

Retention behaves the same way, and the graph proves it every time. The drop-off isn't in your best segment. It's at the seam: the transition where the promise goes slack, the tangent that carries no load, the forty-second mark where the hook's debt comes due and the video changes the subject instead of paying it. The cliff on the graph is a joint that gave.

This is why polishing the showpiece rarely moves the line. The strong part was never the problem. The work lives in the joints — the handoffs between sections, the moments you ask someone to stay through something that hasn't earned their patience yet. Tighten those, and the cliffs flatten out.

The middle needs something to push against

An arch can't stand on its own. It pushes outward at the base, and it needs something solid on each side to push back — the abutments. Take those away and the span has nothing to resist; it falls outward.

A script's abutment is the hook — not the clever first line, but the real promise or open question set early. That's what the middle pushes against. When the opening makes a genuine debt — here's what you'll know by the end, here's the question we're going to answer — the middle has a load to carry, and tension holds it upright. When the opening promises nothing, the middle has nothing pushing back, and it sags. That slow bleed through the middle third isn't a pacing problem. It's a structure with no abutment, falling outward in slow motion.

Build the keystone first

Mortarless arches outlasted the empires that raised them because their builders understood one thing: a span holds through how its forces are arranged, not how much stone you pour in. A video is no different. You don't hold attention by working harder inside a broken structure. You hold it by getting the structure right, then writing to it.

Before the words, find the keystone and the joints. Everything after that is just placing stones.
